This has left many workers wondering how they can protect themselves and their workplaces from the virus. Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is more important than ever.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Situations that could trigger a work refusal could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A danger that is not addressed by normal hazard controls<\/li>\n<li>A danger that would normally stop work<\/li>\n<li>A situation for which you are not properly trained, equipped, or experienced<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The process to follow under Alberta OHS law:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You have been asked to do something you believe is dangerous to yourself or others.<\/li>\n<li>You refuse to do the job because it is not safe and report to your supervisor, employer or other designated person.<\/li>\n<li>If your supervisor does not fix the danger immediately then they must:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>inspect the danger with you and either:\n<ul>\n<li>the Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committee (HSC) co-chair or member representing workers, or<\/li>\n<li>the Health and Safety Representative (H&amp;S Rep), or<\/li>\n<li>another worker selected by you if either of the above is not possible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Take action to fix the danger.<\/li>\n<li>Write a report of the work refusal, inspection, and actions taken. They must also give you a copy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your supervisor might send you to do another job for a short time. You cannot lose pay.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>If you believe you are still in danger, you can:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Continue to refuse, and<\/li>\n<li>Call and make a complaint with the Alberta Government\u2019s Occupational Health and Safety Contact Centre.\n<ul>\n<li>Phone: toll-free: 1-866-415-8690, Edmonton: 780-415-8690<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You can call the OHS Contact Centre at any time<\/li>\n<li>ALL calls are confidential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<p><strong>Assigning another worker to do the job:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If the employer determines it is safe to do so, they may assign another worker to do the work, but they must advise that worker in writing, of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first worker\u2019s refusal,<\/li>\n<li>The reason for the refusal,<\/li>\n<li>The reason why, in the opinion of the employer, the work does not constitute a danger<\/li>\n<li>That worker\u2019s right to refuse dangerous work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>What is the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Contact Centre?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The OHS Contact Centre is part of the Alberta Government\u2019s Ministry of Labour. If you have any questions about health and safety, you can call them\u00a0<strong>anonymously<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 you don\u2019t have to give your name.
