When union activists talk about ‘organizing’ they are usually referring to either internal or external/outside organizing. Internal organizing refers to getting your existing membership engaged, active, informed, and ready to act on a specific issue. External or outside organizing means unionizing non-union workers through the certification process so that they have a fair collective agreement.
A message from Business Representative and Organizer Matt Barnable:
“Attention all members of Local Lodge 99. We have filed an application for certification to represent approximately 95 employees of Weldco Heavy Industries at Fort Mackay AB as of January 17, 2019. We are extremely proud to have the opportunity to represent these workers should we be successful in getting certification with the Alberta Labour Relations Board. It takes courage for workers to join together to make a change, and we are optimistic of what the future holds for the IAM and these employees. The certification process can take some time, and we will keep you updated as it progresses."
